Parttime Associate Pastor Job Posting

First Church of Christ, Congregational

United Church of Christ

Suffield, CT

First Church of Christ Congregational, Suffield (First Church), a 440+ member church in north-central Connecticut, has been dedicating time and resources in order to build a stronger and more sustainable youth ministry.  Using consultants from Ministry Architects and a volunteer-based Renovation Team, First Church has been creating a new infrastructure for the youth ministry, with ambitions to create viable intergenerational connections and programming.

We are seeking a minister (ordained or licensed) to continue moving us forward in our endeavor.  This person needs to be able to work well with adults and children, and foster an engaging culture of volunteerism and involvement.  This position will report to the Senior Minister.

  • Evaluate the existing ministries and programs of First Church and identify where we can move toward intergenerational discipleship.  Attend team meetings and provide feedback to the Senior Minister and church leaders.
  • Oversee the youth ministry and direct the implementation of its mission to provide our 6th-12th graders with opportunities for a positive religious experience.  Using Sustainable Youth Ministry by Mark DeVries, as a blueprint, First Church is dedicated to playing a direct role in creating a more sustainable youth ministry, with guidance from First Church staff and lay leadership.
    • Assist in the implementation of a restructuring plan for the youth ministry in conjunction with the Renovation Team and adult volunteers.
    • Connect members of the congregation to actively participate in our youth’s Christian experience.  Ensure that First Church’s Safe Church practices are being followed by all volunteers (e.g. follow up on background checks).
    • Work closely with the Renovation Team to develop a fun and thoughtful annual calendar for youth-related events.
    • Ensure that there is a coordinator for each calendar event, the event is well-publicized and an adequate number of volunteers are available to assist the coordinator.
    • Oversee the implementation and updating of event notebooks.  The notebooks provide a timeline, list of supplies, volunteers needed, list of attendees, and feedback for every event on the calendar, hopefully translating into a successful outcome.
    • Verify that first-time visitors feel welcomed and receive exceptional and timely follow-up.
    • Be a representative for the youth ministry at church leadership meetings, when appropriate.
  • Create and revamp opportunities for intergenerational worship, mission activities within the wider community, and other church-related functions.
  • Assist the Senior Minister with pastoral responsibilities, which may include hospital, convalescent and home visitation, providing sacrament, children’s sermons and other occasional participation in Sunday worship.

We anticipate this position to be 25 hours/week, of which 15 will be spent on the youth and intergenerational ministries, and 10 will be spent on the administrative component of the youth ministry.
